King when We’re Bored

Lamentations 3:22-24
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,
“therefore I will hope in him.”

Some people have been stuck at home for weeks now, barely going outside, hardly seeing friends and loved ones.

And it can get boring.
Netflix can only be binged for so many hours.
Staring at our phones can only hold our attention for so long.
Reading books tires our eyes after a while.
Zoom calls can help so much.

(And let’s be honest. Many of us have felt bored before as well. We can’t blame all of our boredom on current events.)

I resonate with what Jerry Bridges writes about boredom:

“Every day is important for us because it is a day ordained by God. If we are bored with life there is something wrong with our concept of God and His involvement in our daily lives. Even the most dull and tedious days of our lives are ordained by God and ought to be used by us to glorify Him.”
―Trusting God: Even When Life Hurts

How can we be bored when God’s love never ceases and his mercies never end? They are new every morning; what a great privilege that is! We have the opportunity to live another day, to know God a little more, to love our neighbors and our family a little better.

And yes, I know: it’s easier said than done!
I’ve complained about not having anything to do even though:

  • I have dozens of books to read
  • I own a super-computer aka cellphone with access to the internet
  • There are many things I want to learn
  • I live by the beach!
  • I have two amazing little girls who never seem to get bored of my attention!

…Yet somehow I find myself wishing for something to do.

Today, even if it doesn’t seem like there’s much to do, even if it feels like it might be another “boring” day, let’s observe and enjoy God’s new mercies for us.

Let’s see if we can experience His love, and maybe even share Jesus’ love with others!

Question: When have do you feel bored most frequently? And what do you do about it?

Challenge: Do something productive next time you feel bored!

A few suggestions:
–Call someone over Skype or Zoom (let them see your face and hear your voice, don’t just send them a text!)
–Play a board game or a card game with people in your house.
–Read your Bible, have an impromptu Bible study!
–Learn something new. YouTube can teach us ANYTHING. Let’s learn something new!
