Our Fearless King

Proverbs 3:25-26 TPT
You will not be subject to terror, for it will not terrify you…
because God is your confidence in times of crisis,
keeping your heart at rest in every situation.

These verses challenge our fear, digging up and destroying our hidden insecurities. They confront us with the truth, reminding us of where our hope comes from.

Today I’d like to examine these verses line by line.

“You will not be subject to terror, for it will not terrify you”
I don’t like horror movies. I also dislike it when our lives turn even more chaotic than the scary movies we watch for escapism! Sometimes we find ourselves in terrifying situations, with no clue what to do.

A few weeks ago, Taylor was stung by a scorpion. I rushed home, and I brought her to the hospital. At first, it didn’t seem like she was reacting to the sting at all. I thought my little girl had anti-venom in her blood.

But her face was becoming numb. She’d scrunch up her face and touch her tongue. Then she had trouble breathing, her face was turning redder. I knew that she needed to get to the hospital, but the traffic was horrible. The longer it took to get to the hospital, the worse my baby girl felt. She started vomiting in the car, and all I could do was trust God! I couldn’t make the traffic disappear, I couldn’t make my child feel any better. All I could do was pray, and believe that everything was going to be ok.

“because God is your confidence in times of crisis,”
There is no crisis too big for Jesus. What the world might call world-changing, Jesus calls it a piece of cake. He’s not scared. When the Disciples were scared for their lives on the boat, Jesus was sleeping, totally at ease.

The same God who controls the wind and the waves has His hand on us. We don’t need to fear, because He is “keeping your heart at rest in every situation.”

We can sleep fearlessly.
We can live fearlessly.
We can love fearlessly.

Even when the scorpion stings, or the sickness returns, or the job falls through, we can face it head-on, trusting that our God is in control.

Question: Where has fear been winning in your heart? And what victories have you had over your fears?

Challenge: Read Psalm 23 out loud, and identify the verse that encourages you the most.

Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures.
He leads me beside still waters.
He restores my soul.
He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil,
for you are with me;
your rod and your staff,
they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me
in the presence of my enemies;
you anoint my head with oil;
my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
all the days of my life,
and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
